GALAPAGOS ISLAND TOURS

BLUE FOOTED BOOBIES

BLUE FOOTED BOOBIES

The Galapagas Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 2009 is the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. The English naturalist visited the islands in September 1835 during the second voyage of HMS Beagle, a Royal Navy survey vessel. His observations and research there and elsewhere, became the basis of his Modern Evolution Theory, proving that all species evolved over time from common ancestors. A classic example found on the Galapagos Islands is the Marine Iguana which evolved from the Land Iguana which had to take to the ocean to obtain food.

dscn0266mf1-640-x-4802

The Galapagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago, straddles the Equator, 973 Km off the coast of Ecuador. The group consists of 13 main islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 rocks and islets. The oldest island is thought to have been formed 5-10 million years ago whereas Isabela and Fernandina Islands are still in formation. Cerro Azul Mountain on Isabela, erupted in 2008.

Many rare species of birds and reptiles inhabit this rare eco system. These include the  previously mentioned Marine Iguana, which is totally indifferent to humans and it enjoys a basic diet of algae.

The Galapagos Hawk has less than 150 mating pairs. It has wing spans of up to four feet.  Another very interesting bird is the Frigatebird, it  makes a habit of stealing catches from others. The male has a bright red airsack and a wonderful head-shaking routine when mating. The Nocturnal Swallow Tailed Gull often follows cruise vessels, feeding on the night-swimming marine life. The Mocking Birds do not actually mock the calls of other birds and live off lizards, small fishes and insects. They have no obvious fear of people and will often follow you out of curiosity.

crabcn05781-640-x-4801

Other interesting species include the colorful Sally Lightfoot Crab a most photogenic creature, growing more vermilion in colour as it grows older. The Land Iguanas perhaps not as attractive to look at, feed on raw cactus, spines and all!  Marine Turtles, eat algae like the Marine Iguana and can hold their breath for hours, allowing swimmers to join them!

The Galapagos Penguins were allegedly stranded by the Humboldt Current on the islands. Finally, the Blue-Footed Boobie Birds are perhaps the most famous. Named after the Spanish word for Clown, their courtship dance has to be seen to be believed and they also seem indifferent to human company.

With the wide spread nature of the archipelago, the only practical way to view each island is by sea. You have a choice of Cruise Ship or Motor Yachts which provide Galapagos Island Tours.  A typical cruise ship is up to 300 feet in length and provides all the expected facilities of an hotel. Its speed enables you to see more of the Galapagos in less time.  All ships carry a team of naturalist to prepare passengers for the excursions on the islands.

A typical luxury motor yacht carries around 30 passengers allowing personal service and a familiar atmosphere. With suites, cabins, air conditioning, library, bars and a clinic etc, they have all the facilities of a much larger cruise vessel.

With its equatorial location, the islands are blessed with good weather all year round. June to December is the Dry Season with blue skies and often mid-day showers. During this period mammals and land birds are active with sea birds performing courtship rituals. December to May is the Warm Season, with more tropical weather. There are specific breeding patterns and you should check these if you have a particular bird or mammal in mind. In October the Albatross arrive and commence their breeding courtship. No matter the date, you will find amazing wildlife activity.

The isolation and late discovery of the Galapagos Islands, together with an absence of predators has made for a unique environment and examples of evolution not seen anywhere else. Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and enjoy this wildlife showcase on one of the wonderful Galapagos Island Tours.

YANGTSE RIVER CRUISE

dsc_95381-752-x-500

If you do not have the stomach ( literally!) or sea legs for an ocean cruise, then a River Cruise is a great option. In this article we feature a Yangtse River Cruise, in China.

The Yangtse or The Ten Thousand Li River, the largest in China flows 6,300 Km from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the East China Sea, north of Shanghai. The Chinese know it as Chang Jiang - The Longest River. According to the Chinese, If you have not traveled up Chiang Jiang, you have not traveled anywhere.

The cruise we describe, lasts for 7-9 days and will travel from Chongqing, via Yichang to Wuhan with a possible extension to the metropolis of Shanghai. We will highlight some of the magnificent sights and attractions provided by the Yangtse River.

CHONGQING, at the start of the cruise, is the fastest growing urban centre in the world. With 31 million inhabitants. Its population is larger than Peru, Malaysia or Iraq. Before leaving, visit the old military HQ of General Chiang Kai Shek dating from when Chongqing was the capital during WW2. In Red Rock Village is the former residence of General W Stilwell (VinegarJoe) who headed US operations against the Japanese. The Zha Zi Dong is one of two prisons where 300 communist political prisoners were massacred at the end of the Civil War in 1949.

FENGDU, located on the north bank, is known as The Ghost City. According to legend, the dead come to Fengdu and the devils go to hell.

WANXIAN is 327 Km from Chongqing and has been known as The Gateway to Eastern Sichuan. Cruise ships aim to arrive at night in order to enter The Three Gorgesat dawn. The Open Market sells seasonal delicacies such as Mountain Mushrooms and live eels. Shengli Lu is a night market selling Wanxian cane and rattan products. You can also purchase painted and varnished  river stones.

After YUNGYANG, FENGJIE and BADONG is ZIGUI at the junction of the Yangtse and Xiangxi rivers. It is the birthplace of Qu Wuhan, a poet and politician who threw himself into the river as a protest in The Warring States Period. Locals drop zongzi (sticky rice) into the waters hoping the fish will eat the rice rather than Qu.

THREE GORGES

Sandwiched between the mountains in the mid part of the Yangtse, The Three Gorges cut across the Fengjie and Wushan Mountain in Sichuan and Badong and  Zigui and Yichang in Hubei Province. With its towering cliffs, 1000 metres high, overhanging rocks and waterfalls it is a unique spectacle.

QUTANG GORGE, running east to west, is 8 Km long and only dozens of metres wide. WU GORGEextends 40 Km from the mouth of the Daning River to Badong in the east. The Peak of the Goddess is one of the 12 peaks flanking the gorge.  XILINGXIA GORGE is 75 Km long with dangerous shoals and hidden reefs.

THREE GORGES DAM PROJECT

In Xilingxia Gorge is the Three Gorges Dam Project. It is the largest hydroelectric project in the world with a power plant, dam and a series of locks. It will generate the equivalent of 15 nuclear power stations, will control the centuries-old problem of devastating floods and permit navigation into the interior.

After MAOPING, at YINCHANG, it is possible to continue the trip to WUHAN. YINCHANG, The Gateway to the Three Gorges, is a busy port where the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtse divide.

Continuing to WUHAN, YUEYANG is on the south bank at the mouth of Dongting Lake which is the second largest freshwater lake in China. Its most famous attraction is The Yueyang Tower built 1000 years ago on the east shore of the lake.

WUHAN, with a population of over 7 million, is the capital of Hubei Province. Here the Yangtse meets its biggest tributary, the Han River. WUHAN is known as The Thoroughfare to Nine Provinces. It has many scenic and historical sites. These include The Yellow Crane Tower, 1700 years old and one of three famous towers in South China, East Lake and the ancient Guiyuan Temple. Its TV Tower on Tortoise Hill is claimed to be the tallest mast in Asia.

From WUHAN, one can continue to SHANGHAI, whose attractions are so very many that they will  need a separate article!

In previous times, ships were pulled by hand, through dangerous reaches by TRACKERS. Men working from narrow paths cut into the steep cliffs. Today, there are modern cruise ships with 5 star, hotel-like facilities. A typical vessel is 90m long and accommodates around 200 passengers. There are suites, deluxe staterooms and standard rooms, many with private balconies and bathrooms. Facilities include restaurants, bars and coffee shops,  observation areas, beauty salons, live entertainment and usually a clinic.

In this instance the old phrase - A Slow Boat to China - is very apt. The mighty Yangtse provides access to spectacular scenery, cultural treasures, religious and historical sites and the awesome Three Gorges Dam. A special holiday well worth considering.

We would recommend the best time to travel on a Yangtse River Cruise would be in April and May or September and October.

GORILLA TOUR

TRACKING THE ENDANGERED MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

The Mountain Gorilla is the rarest and most endangered of the Great Apes. In this article we feature a wildlife Gorilla Tour Holiday which provides a unique opportunity of tracking the endangered mountain gorillas in the rain forests of East Africa. Last year, over 800,000 tourists visited Uganda to enjoy a memorable experience trekking gorillas.

The United Nations Environment Programme has designated 2009 as The Year of The Gorilla.

Gorillas, the largest of the great apes are divided into 3 sub species. The Western and Eastern Lowland gorillas and the rare Mountain Gorillas. Lowland Gorillas are found in many zoos. Only about 700 Mountain Gorillas remain in the wild, with none in captivity.

The world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas live within four national Parks in East Africa in two regions, 45 km apart.

Around 350 animals, half the world’s population of Mountain Gorillas inhabit The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. It is believed that the ancient forest of Bwindi has 20-30 family troops. A few of these families have been habituated (accustomed to humans)

The second population is found within three National Parks in the Virunga Mountains. This is a chain of volcanoes along the northern border of Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of The Congo(DRC) and in Uganda. Part of The Great Rift Valley, the range rises to a height of 3-4500m. Most are dormant although Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Sabyinyo erupted as recently as 2006.

Mgahinga National Park, 33 sq Km in area, is located in southwest Uganda. It is home to around 50 gorillas in 5 groups. The Nyakagezi Group is the only troop habituated to humans. A process which can take up to 2 years. This group  is also inclined to cross the border into Rwanda or the DRC.

Rwanda has Parc des Volcans where Diane Fossey (Author of Gorillas in The Mist) studied the Mountain Gorillas for 20 years and is credited with a reduction in poaching. The park covers 46 sq miles and encompasses six volcanoes.

The DRC has a section of the Virunga Mountains called The Parc Nationale des Virunga.

Gorilla Troops number up to 30 apes and are led by one dominant, mature gorilla known as a silverback, because of a silver tinge to their hair, grown at about 13 years of age. The group contains several young males, some females and their offspring. The Silverback protects the troop and organises eating, nesting and travel. Despite an impressive size and  obvious physical strength, the Mountain Gorilla is usually calm and non-aggressive. Surprisingly, they are herbivores and eat over 100 species of plants. Despite poaching and destruction of their habitats by logging and recent civil strife in the area, their numbers remain stable and even show a slight increase.

Tracking is a memorable experience but with long days, dense vegetation and steep slopes it is not for the elderly, very young or unfit. There are some basic rules.

Minimum age is 15 years
You must not be sick or carry any infectious disease. The apes ate extremely vulnerable to human complaints.
No flash photography is permitted
No eating or drinking in the vicinity of the gorillas
No touching. Although they may decide to touch you!!

As normal with any trekking, you must have suitable footwear and clothing. The climate is wet and cool in the mountains.

Binoculars are a useful addition to your equipment.

Finally, check with your safari tour operator that Gorilla Watching Permits are included in the cost. These daily permits can be quite expensive.

There are few wildlife experiences to compare with being upclose to the rarest and most majestic of all the apes - the Mountain Gorilla. With only 700 left in the wild, this is an exciting and unique Gorilla Tour Holiday.

KIDS DAY OUT

img_53021-528-x-396

Top Zoos for Kids

If truth be told, zoos used to be an unlikely addition to a family’s holiday plans. If your recollection of a zoo is of caged, listless animals in a boring, non-friendly environment then read on.

Most zoos today have open, realistic habitats where you can appreciate the beauty of many endangered species - spotted, striped, big, small, wild and meek - housed nowadays in an environment compatible with the current debate on saving the planet.

In 2007  there were over 16000 endangered species in the world and  some of these do not exist outside of zoos. Today, Zoos are involved in major conservation, breeding and educational programmes, providing great opportunities for a kids day out and for them to get up close to the animals, reptiles and birds.

In this article we feature the top Zoos for kids. Obviously, any such lists are subjective in that one’s particular choice is dependent on various factors such as the type of exhibits, programmes available and family-friendly facilities.

We suggest that the following are worthy of inclusion in your travel plans as a break from the beach, scenic tours and historic sites. These provide a truly great kids day out.

pic1064701720171-634-x-845

In the Children’s Area, The Flamingo Pond is surrounded by an Azalea Garden, The lakeside Butterfly Garden has over 15000 plants and The Great Escape exhibit recreates a Rain Forest allowing the Kids to see gorillas and orangutans up close.

CHESTER ZOO, ENGLAND

Chester Zoo is the largest in England. It was the dream of George Mottershead who founded it in the 1930’s, as The Zoo Without Bars. With more than a million visitors each year, it is a favourite for kids of all ages. With around 7000 animals and 400 different species it houses some of the most endangered in the world. Chester’s aim is conservation with most of the species being involved in breeding programmes.

The latest exhibit is The Realm of The Red Ape, which houses threatened Sumatran and Bornean Orangutans. Two births this year are examples of a successful breeding programme. The Tropical Realm contains much of the tropical bird collection in an enormous free-flight and walk through area.In the collection is The Wild Soccoro Dove, which is now extinct in the wild, together with the critically endangered Bali Starling and The Monteserrat Oriole.

The Twilight Zone, one of the most popular exhibits, is unusual in that visitors share the space with Bats. The rare Rodrigues Bat, from Mauritius has been breeding well since 1984.

The Islands in Danger house the Komodo Dragons. These intelligent reptiles reach 3 metres in length and weigh up to 100Kg. The Jaguar Houseis modelled on both Savannah and Rain Forest to display the normal habitats of these animals.

Finally, for the kids is The Kids Ark with a range of activities, games and rides, including face painting and pottery design and painting to keep them amused.

The modern Zoo has changed drastically in recent years and is now a great kids day out. Full of fun-filled attractions for all the family. Well worth adding to the holiday plans on your next vacation.

SPRING BREAK IN PAYSON ARIZONA

monumentcn_71451-788-x-525

With 300 days of sunshine each year, cool mountain air and temperatures in May in the mid 60’s, Arizona is a great location for that Spring Break. In this article we feature the town of Payson and The Rim Country.

Payson in Gila County, 90 miles north of Phoenix and 90 miles south of Flagstaff, is known as The Mountain Town with A Western Heritage. Its position at the geographical centre of the State, mild weather and an elevation of 5250 ft  make it a superb tourist base.

Payson and The Rim Country have long been the place for Native American Archaeology, Western Heritage and Old West Exploration.

Main Street, Payson has become a tourist attraction in its own right. At one end is the 45 acre Green Valley Park with its 3 lakes stocked with rainbow trout, decorative fountains and picnic ramadas. Historic Main Street is a mecca for treasure hunters with its antique stores  and art shops. There is an historic Cowboy Saloon- the Ox Bow. The restaurants include the Main Street Grille, which apart from great food has two friendly ghosts.

The town has several museums and a must for all visitors is the Rim Country Museum and within its grounds an authentic replica of Zane Grey’s Cabin. Zane Grey was The Father of The Western Novel and wrote 64 novels and 300 short stories, which were the basis of 130 movies

Within easy reach of Payson there are some of the scenic jewels of Arizona.

The overwhelming presence of  The Mogollon Rim, an escarpment rising to 7000ft, with its Ponderosa Pine Forests, is named after a Spanish Governor of New Mexico in the 1700’s.

In a small valley between Payson and Pine is The Tonto Natural Bridge. At 183ft high straddling a 400ft long tunnel, measuring 150ft at its widest point, the bridge formed by chalk deposits from springs is the largest of its type in the world.

The Shoofly Indian Ruins at an elevation of 5240ft date back to 1000-1250AD. Rim Country is the very heart of the prehistoric cultures of the Southwest

If you are feeling energetic then the Payson Area Trails are for you. This trail system (parts still in development) is a system using pathways, sidewalks and bike lanes in Payson, connected to Forest Service Roads. The six major trails include American Gulch, Boulder Loop, Houston and Monument Loop Trail.

Still feeling energetic? Various trailheads give access to the Wilderness Areas. Hellsgate, Mazatza, (Land of the Deer) and Granite Dells Wilderness are the remnants of the wild lands from the early growth of Arizona. Many are protected and managed by the Forest Service. With rough and broken terrain with very steep slopes, trekking here is not for the very young, very old or unfit. The usual cautions apply. Take sufficient water, wear suitable footwear and clothing and make sure others know of your route and plans.

Few states enjoy the diversity of hunting available around Payson. Game ranges from the stately elk to small animals and waterfowl.

With more than a dozen lakes, the Payson area is a fisherman’s paradise. Green Valley Lake is located at the west end of Main Street and is stocked with Rainbow Trout from October to May. The fisherman’s favourite is Bear Canyon Lake, its 60 acres has rainbows, brookies,cut-throat and Arctic grayling.

Near Payson are three National Forests. Coconino and Sitgreaves  cover the mountain elevations with Tonto in the desert.

If you are fortunate to be in Payson for the Memorial Weekend of 23-24 May, you can enjoy The 21st Arizona Logger’s Sawdust Festival. Professionals and amateurs compete for the coveted title of Logger of The Year, executing traditional logging skills. The kids can also meet Smokey The Bear.

Whether you enjoy sightseeing, antique hunting, hiking, fishing, hunting, biking, eating or shopping, Payson and The Rim Country have it all in the Spring. Enjoy a great Spring Break in Payson Arizona.

ARIZONA RODEO

rodeo_2004_0961-739-x-492

PAYSON, ARIZONA WHERE RODEO BEGAN

All you Wannabee Cowboys, Cowgirls and your  families who are  interested in Arizona Rodeo should head for Payson,  from  May 15 -16 2009.

Payson, known as a Mountain Town With A Western Heritage, is 90 miles North of Phoenix and 90 miles South of Flagstaff. This is where rodeos began and the town has been associated with such competitions for 125 years. Rodeos were first held to provide cowhands with a place to meet and compare roping skills and cow ponies prior to the big Fall roundup.

The first event for 2009 is The Gary Hardt Memorial Spring Rodeo, to honour the memory of a Payson citizen who died in 1987. Hardt was a well known competitor, known throughout the Southwest for his bull roping and other roping talents. His career started in 1963 at The World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo in Payson ( held annually in August)

On May 15-16 The Spring Rodeo includes traditional competitions such as Bareback and Saddle Bronco Riding plus timed events comprising Tie Down Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling together with Barrel Racing and Bull Riding. These are supported by traditional Clown Acts and entertainment.

For the uninitiated, we include an explanation of these great rodeo events.

BAREBACK AND SADDLE BRONCO RIDING

Originally based on the horse breaking skills of the working cowboy, the rider attempts to stay on the horse for 8 seconds without touching the animal with his free hand. In saddle bronco, the rider uses a special saddle with free stirrups and no horn. He grips a simple rein attached to a halter. In bareback, the rider has no saddle or rein, using one hand to grip rigging attached to the horse’s body

TIE DOWN ROPING (CALF ROPING)

From a standing start the rider chases the pre-released calf and throws a lariat around the calf’s neck. He dismounts, picks up the calf and flips it onto its side. He then ties three of its legs with a short rope and the clock is stopped. The animal must remain  immobilised for six seconds before the time is recorded. The world record is 6+ seconds.

TEAM ROPING (HEADING AND HEELING)

This features a steer and two mounted cowboys or cowgirls and is the only rodeo event where men and women compete equally together. The Header must rope the steer around head and/or horns and then makes a Dally which is a couple of turns around the horn of his saddle. The Heeler then throws a loop around the running steer’s legs and both horses back up immobilising the steer. A professional team will take 4-12 seconds to stretch the animal.

STEER WRESTLING (BULL DOGGING)

A mounted rider chases a steer, dismounts and wrestles the animal to the ground. Once all four legs are off the ground the time is recorded. Steers usually weigh 450-650 lbs and professional times are in the range of 3.5-10 seconds.

BULL RIDING

This involves a rider attempting to stay on a large bull for 8 seconds holding a long, braided rope. It has been described as The Most Dangerous 8 Seconds in Sport

BARREL RACING

Here horse and rider attempt to complete a cloverleaf pattern around three 55 gallon barrels in the fastest time. It is essentially a rodeo event for the cowgirls.

Clowns appear at all these competitions, their job being to distract animals when riders have dismounted or fallen.

On May 16 you can also take in The Payson Aero Fair. Prior to the show at 7.30am you can enjoy  The Payson Pilot’s Association, Pancake Breakfast. This show is fun for all the family with new, classic and vintage aeroplane displays, antique cars and tractors and a host of Food and Craft Vendors.

Whether you are a keen rodeo enthusiast or a tourist, enjoy your Spring visit to Payson the home of Arizona Rodeo.

PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL

BEAUTIFUL ROSES

BEAUTIFUL ROSES

June is the month of Rose Festivals. In this, the first of our articles about these great events, we feature the Portland Rose Festival, Oregon.

This year’s extended festival opens one week earlier on Memorial Day Weekend and provides three weekends of Remembrance, Revelry and Roses, from May 22-6 June 2009. The Portland Rose Festival celebrated its Centennial in 2007 and is organised by the volunteer, non-profit Portland Rose Festival Association to promote the region.

Given the length of the festivities and the huge number of fantastic attractions, we highlight a selection of the major events.

The Festival kicks off with The Fireworks Spectacular, on May 22nd, illuminating Portland’s Downtown Waterfront with thunderous pyrotechnics after dark. This year’s event will be choreographed to music.

On May 30, if you are fit enough, you can join the expected 4000 runners in the largest fun-run in Oregon. The Starlight Run covers a mere 3.1 miles with prizes for winners and the best fancy dress costumes.

Started in 1907  The Fred Meyer Junior Parade became an official event in The Portland Rose Festivalin 1936. This children’s parade has become an annual tradition for Portland families. Bands, school and scout groups, youth clubs and dance teams join in with decorated floats, wagons and even bikes. This year’s event is on 3rd June at 1.00pm. PASADENA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL

DELICIOUS STRAWBERRYS

DELICIOUS STRAWBERRYS

Pasadena, Texas,  Strawberry Festival 15-17 May 2009

The City of Pasadena in Texas may no longer be The Strawberry Capital of The World but the residents of the 15th largest city in The Lone Star State and 40-50,000 visitors will enjoy fun and a sweet treat at the 36th Annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival in May.

The growing of strawberries was introduced into Pasadena after the Galveston Storm of 1900 which reached as far inland as Pasadena. The strawberry plants were  imported to provide a quick cash crop to aid both residents and the influx of refugees from Galveston. The project was a huge commercial success, hence the earlier title of  The Strawberry Capital of The World. The 2009 and 36thFestival celebrates the rebirth of a struggling small town.

The 3-day event provides fun for all the family in 106 acres at  The Pasadena Fairgrounds. In this article we highlight some of the great attractions, apart from eating strawberries.

As this is Texas you would expect big things. The Festival’s Strawberry Shortcake which is produced each year made the Guinness Book of Records in 2005. A mere 1905 square feet, covered in more than a ton of strawberries, its 2009 counterpart will be unveiled and  cut during the opening ceremony on the Friday.Yes, you can buy a slice.

Throughout the 3 days there is continuous musical entertainment on the International Main Stage with foot tapping and hand clapping country, rock and Tejano style music.

Contests include The High School Mud Volley Ball Tournament, open to High School students. As the name suggests, this takes place in a mud pit and can be messy! Parents should note that showers are available after the event!

The Festival Cook Off Contest, obviously does not involve strawberries but the barbecue brisket, ribs, fajitas and gumbo entries are a delicious complement to the strawberry shortcake. Strange behaviour may be observed as the chefs rituals often involve talking to the food.

Speciality attractions include The Trick Roper. Doug Whitaker mixes comedy with precise forms of skill few cowboys can execute. Doug is a master gun spinner, bullwhip artist and trick roper.

The Swifty Swine Racing and Swimming Pig Show is as the name suggests is an action packed and entertaining performance by these animals.

Mutton Bustin’ is for the little cowgirls and boys. The kids hang on to the sheep like the real cowboys ride the bulls. There are ten riders per competition and all are timed from leaving the chute to dismount. It’s a miniature rodeo.

Clowns and free games will delight the kids inside the Strawberry Field’s Children’s Pavilion which houses a petting zoo and pony rides.

In addition there is a Carnival, arts and crafts displays and of course the festival will have the usual food vendors.

You can view all the activities either from the top of the Ferris Wheel ride or in a helicopter trip above the Fairground.

Enjoy an exciting Texas tradition and take all the family to the Pasadena Strawberry Festival in May 2009.
