CHRISTMAS IN PRAGUE

The ancient city of Prague is the “Jewel in the Crown” of Central Europe and provides a truly outstanding and traditional holiday at Christmas. After its emergence from Communism, many of its ancient buildings have been transformed into stylish hotels and restaurants, although you can still eat pork and dumplings washed down with beer in traditional eateries. Its compact, medieval centre is a warren of cobbled streets, passages and churches overlooked by an 1100 year-old castle.

Christmas in Prague means Christmas Markets set in a wonderful winter wonderland. The main ones take place in The Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square with brightly decorated wooden huts selling Czech handicrafts and local food. With snow underfoot, a glass of hot wine helps the shopping along!

These markets are not only about shopping. In The Old Town Square, children can stroke goats and sheep alongside the huge Bethlehem Manger Tableau. The gigantic Christmas tree, brought from the Sumava Mountains in the South of the Czech Republic is an impressive sight and beautifully decorated and illuminated.

Christmas also means carols and from the stage in the Square local and international choirs and musicians entertain the shoppers. The local school children dress in traditional costumes and sing and dance on the stage. This is truly a romantic and wonderful scene with all the elements of Christmas. Including the snow!

Christmas Eve is the most festive day in the Czech Republic and Mass is celebrated both in the Old Town Square and at midnight in the many churches in the city.

On New Year’s Eve there are firework displays at midnight in The Old Town Square and on Charles Bridge. The best view of these is from the Vitaya River where cruise boats offer dining or a Jazz Cruise with live music and dancing.

Prague is a compact city and many other attractions lie within walking distance of the centre on both banks of the river. These include the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter, the Lesser Town and Prague Castle.

Together with traditional eating places there are several new, top floor restaurants with stunning views over the city and the illuminations after dark. Prague is a most beautiful city particularly at Christmas.

For the shoppers the main area is Wenceslas Square extending along Na Prikope into Republic Square. Parizka has luxury boutiques while Mala Strana has some fine art galleries.

Christmas in Prague is a family holiday in the festive season with all the ingredients that make up an old fashioned Christmas, set against the background of an historical European city.
